How to Rig a Poncho / Basha Shelter: 3 Setups Explained

A genuine military poncho is one of the most useful bits of kit you can carry — wear it in the rain, or rig it as a shelter (a basha) in minutes. If you've never done it before it looks fiddly from the outside, but once you know the two or three core setups it takes less time than pitching a tent. Here's exactly how we do it, step by step.

What you need

  • A poncho with reinforced grommets/eyelets around the edge — genuine issue ponchos are built for exactly this
  • Paracord or guyline — roughly 5-8 metres is plenty for most setups
  • 4-6 stakes/pegs
  • Two trees, or one pole plus two trees, depending on the setup

Setup 1: The basic lean-to

  1. Run a ridge line (paracord) between two trees at roughly waist height
  2. Drape the poncho over the ridge line so it hangs evenly
  3. Peg the two bottom corners on one side flat to the ground
  4. Pull the opposite edge up and out, and peg it at an angle to form a single sloped roof
  5. Tension the ridge line and all pegs until the fabric is taut, with no sag

This gives you rain and wind cover from one direction, which is exactly what you want if you know which way the weather's coming from and you've got a fire going on the open side.

Best for: quick overnight stops, fire-friendly camps, low-to-moderate wind. Not the shelter to pick if the wind or rain direction could shift overnight.

Setup 2: The A-frame (double lean-to)

  1. Run a ridge line between two trees, same as the lean-to
  2. Drape the poncho over the ridge line and let it fall evenly on both sides
  3. Peg out all four bottom corners taut, pulling outward at roughly 45 degrees
  4. If you're carrying one, prop a centre pole under the ridge line at each end to stop the roof sagging in rain
  5. Check both sides are pegged evenly so the shelter sits symmetrical, not lopsided

Because it's closed on both sides, the A-frame copes far better with shifting wind and rain direction than the basic lean-to, at the cost of losing that open fire-facing side.

Best for: overnight sleeping, unpredictable weather, no fire needed. This is the setup to reach for if you're not sure which way the weather's going to turn.

Setup 3: The plough point (no trees needed)

  1. Peg one edge of the poncho flat to the ground
  2. Stake a single guyline into the ground a short distance from the opposite corner
  3. Pull that opposite corner up and out along the guyline until the fabric forms a low wedge shape
  4. Peg the two remaining side corners to hold the wedge shape open
  5. Crawl in from the low, open end

If you can't find two suitable trees, or you're pitching low to stay out of the wind entirely, this is the setup to use. It sits much closer to the ground than either lean-to option, which makes it the best choice in exposed or very windy spots, at the cost of headroom.

Tips that make the difference

  • Pitch with your feet towards the wind, not your head — it's a small thing but it makes a real difference to a comfortable night.
  • Use the hood correctly. Genuine ponchos have a hood in the centre; tie it off tightly with cord (or tuck a twig through the drawcord) so it doesn't leak directly onto you.
  • Ground moisture is the real enemy, not rain from above — always get a groundsheet, second poncho, or even a layer of dry bracken between you and the ground.
  • Practise before you need it. The first time you rig a basha should not be in the dark in the rain — do it once in the garden or a local wood so your hands know what to do.
